Pico do Pedro – Pico da Esperança – Fajã do Ouvidor (PR4 SJO)

If you love mountain hikes and are looking for an unforgettable adventure, the Pico da Esperança trail on São Jorge will absolutely win you over! This scenic route crosses the island’s central ridge, starting at the foot of Pico do Pedro and ending in the charming Fajã do Ouvidor on the north coast. Along the way, you’ll reach the highest point on São Jorge – Pico da Esperança – rising 1,053 metres above sea level. The path winds through protected areas, both for the preservation of bird habitats and for its extraordinary volcanic formations that make the scenery truly breathtaking.

The hike begins at the base of Pico do Pedro and takes you across the island’s northern slopes, passing numerous peaks such as Carvão, Junça, Verde, Montoso, and Morro Pelado. The absolute highlight is, without a doubt, the summit of Pico da Esperança itself, offering incredible views over a volcanic crater with a lake in the middle. After circling the crater, the trail continues along the central ridge, passing more picturesque peaks like Pico do Areiro and Pico Pinheiro.

From there, the route descends northward through forested areas, rural paths, and short paved sections until you reach Fajã do Ouvidor. This unique spot is known for its striking lava landscape, which stands out from the more typical fajãs of São Jorge. Here, you’ll find a small fishing port, local shops, and a natural swimming area – the perfect reward after a demanding hike.

Before setting off, make sure to check the weather. Good visibility is essential to truly enjoy the spectacular views. Hiking this trail in fog or rain simply doesn’t do it justice – Azorean trails really need the right conditions to reveal their magic.

Fajã dos Cubres – Caldeira de Santo Cristo (PR1 SJO)

This picturesque trail, about 8 km long, starts at the Eolic Park in Serra do Topo. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to spot many endemic plants and birds – a wonderful opportunity to admire the biodiversity of the Azores while enjoying the stunning natural scenery.

As you descend towards Caldeira de Santo Cristo, you’ll cross the Tia Júlia bridge, which leads to a scenic detour to Cascata Pequena. The entire route is well-marked. Following the trail, you’ll arrive at the Sanctuary of Senhor Santo Cristo and the Environmental Interpretive Centre, where you can learn more about the local ecosystem.

Caldeira de Santo Cristo is not only famous for its clam farming but is also a protected area of great cultural and scenic importance. Continuing towards Fajã dos Cubres, you’ll pass the charming old settlement of Fajã do Belo, which was inhabited until the 1980s.

At the end of the route, you’ll reach Fajã dos Cubres, home to the church of Nossa Senhora de Lourdes and a connection point to other trails on the island, such as GR 02 SJO (west side) and GR 01 SJO (east side). This trail is open year-round and is perfect to explore in any season. Don’t forget your camera – the views along the way are truly unforgettable!

The trail begins near the chapel of Santo António, descending along a forest road. Right from the start, you’ll enjoy stunning views over Fajãs de Além, Ouvidor, and Ribeira da Areia. On clear days, you can even spot the distant islands of Terceira and Graciosa. Once you reach the Fajã, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a charming scene of traditional houses and small agricultural fields.

As you explore this hidden gem, you’ll come across various local buildings, including wineries and an old watermill known as “Moinho do Sr. Moisés.” The place feels frozen in time, and the locals – famous for their hospitality – are often eager to share their traditions, invite you for a chat, or offer a taste of regional liqueur. It’s worth pausing to soak up the atmosphere of this unique spot.

After exploring Fajã, the return route takes you along the eastern side. The climb back up the cliff follows natural water springs and streams flowing down the slopes. Watch your step on the old stone stairs, which can be slippery on rainy days. During the ascent, you’ll be treated to more stunning views of Fajã de Além, making the return journey just as memorable.

Fajã dos Vimes – Lourais – Fajã de São João (PR3 SJO)

If you love hikes with ocean views and are looking for a challenging route, the southern coast of São Jorge has the perfect trail for you. This is one of the most beautiful hikes on the island – but also one of the most demanding. The path leads from Fajã dos Vimes through Fajã dos Bodes, then across the picturesque Lourais, and finally to Fajã de São João. Along the way, you can expect numerous waterfalls, lush forest, tranquility, and breathtaking scenery.

The trek begins in Fajã dos Vimes, where it’s worth sampling the locally grown coffee – the only coffee produced in the Azores – a perfect way to start your day and fuel up for the challenges ahead. Views of Pico and Faial accompany you for most of the route, creating an unforgettable horizon. The trail follows the coastline, winding through forests filled with endemic trees and shrubs. At a certain point, the gentle walk turns into a steep climb – this is where the real challenge begins. The inclines will have your legs working hard, but it’s worth stopping now and then to take in the stunning views.

When you reach Lourais, you’ll understand why this hike is considered one of the most beautiful on the island. You’ll cross several streams, including Ribeira do Salto, which after rainfall turns into a spectacular waterfall. The descent towards Fajã dos Bodes and Fajã de São João is equally impressive, though it requires caution as the stones can be slippery.

After a long but rewarding day, you’ll arrive at Fajã de São João – a small fishing village full of charm, with peaceful surroundings and narrow cobbled streets. It’s the perfect place to end your hike, and for those wanting more, there are connections to other trails that intersect in this area.

Remember to check the weather and any possible trail closures before setting off – after heavy rainfall, some sections may be difficult to pass. Bring enough water and snacks, as while there are small restaurants along the way, they may be closed outside the main season.

Grande Rota de São Jorge (GR02 SJO)

If you’re in the mood for a true adventure, the Grande Rota de São Jorge is one of those hikes that will stay with you for a lifetime. This long-distance trail covers half of the island, revealing the beauty of São Jorge’s volcanic landscapes, which change dramatically as you go. Along the way, you’ll climb steep cliffs and descend to the island’s famous fajãs – small, flat areas at the foot of the mountains that give São Jorge its unique character.

The trail is divided into two main stages: the first is about 22 km, and the second is 30 km. It starts at Ponta dos Rosais, on the island’s western tip, and runs all the way to Fajã dos Cubres on the north coast. It’s important to plan this hike carefully due to its length and significant elevation changes. This route requires strong physical fitness, but in return, it offers incredible rewards – from wild forest landscapes to stunning ocean views, plus countless opportunities to dip into the Atlantic and rest along the way.

Be prepared for solitude: for much of the trail, you won’t see many other people. While São Jorge is becoming more popular among nature lovers, it still offers moments of pure peace and quiet, especially on challenging routes like this. Occasionally, you’ll pass through small villages where you can rest, refill supplies, meet the locals, and sample regional delicacies.

Proper gear is a must! While the trail is open year-round, the island’s weather can change quickly, and conditions can be demanding. Still, every drop of sweat is worth it – this hike is more than just a walk; it’s a journey through the heart of São Jorge, allowing you to fully experience the island’s raw, natural beauty.

Finally, although the trail is split into stages, it’s worth considering an overnight stay along the route. Wild camping is not allowed, but you’ll find plenty of accommodation options – from rural tourism guesthouses to lodges.

Caminho das Fontes (PRC10 SJO)

Caminho das Fontes is a unique trail that begins in the charming village of Calheta, right by the port. At the very start, it’s worth stopping by the Francisco de Lacerda Museum, which preserves the heritage of São Jorge and its local community. You’ll also find a few useful amenities nearby, including shops, restaurants, and a pharmacy.

The hike starts with a fairly steep climb along Ladeira Velha – an old road that once connected the upper parts of the village to the port. Parts of the path are still paved with traditional 19th-century cobblestones, adding to its charm. After just a short walk, you can rest at the Ladeira Velha Picnic Park or enjoy the wonderful views from the Rua de Baixo viewpoint, overlooking Calheta and the neighbouring islands of Pico and Faial.

Reaching the Biscoitos area – the highest point on the route – you’ll come across the church of Nossa Senhora do Socorro. From here, you enter the “Caminho das Fontes” itself, a path that once played an important role in the local community. Residents of nearby villages would come here to collect water from the “Fontes da Rocha” springs and wash clothes in the stone basins. Along the way, you’ll pass the ruins of an old watermill and cultivated farmland.

The trail leads on to Fajã Grande, where you’ll pass the chapel of Senhor Bom Jesus. Right next to it, there’s a campsite and a beach – a perfect place to take a break. The path then follows the coastline, passing an old windmill and the Santa Catarina canning factory, famous for producing tuna preserves using traditional methods.

In the final stretch of the trail, you’ll pass the church of Santa Catarina – the main church in Calheta – as well as the Império do Divino Espírito Santo, before returning to the port where your journey ends.

Serra do Topo to Fajã dos Vimes (PR02)

If you’re looking for a challenge and dream of walking through breathtaking landscapes, the Serra do Topo to Fajã dos Vimes trail is a perfect choice. This 5.3 km route takes you through some of São Jorge’s most scenic corners, offering not only stunning views but also encounters with the island’s endemic flora. The trail is open year-round, and you’re unlikely to meet many other hikers – just be prepared for slightly more demanding conditions.

The hike begins near the Serra do Topo wind farm, where you’ll immediately be greeted by rolling fields and the region’s signature blue hydrangeas, leading you down a narrow dirt path. After passing through the first gate, you’ll enter dense forest filled with native plants. The path can be muddy and slippery in places, so sturdy footwear is essential.

As you continue the descent, you’ll come to a wooden gate near a set of stone steps leading steeply down the cliff. Once you reach the paved road, turn right. Along this stretch, you’ll find a freshwater spring known as Fonte de Água Azeda – an ideal spot for a short break. After passing the spring, turn left towards Fajã dos Vimes, where a real treat awaits – a traditional handicraft workshop producing handmade quilts. And of course, you shouldn’t miss the chance to taste the locally grown coffee.

The trail ends at a charming marina, where the waters of the Atlantic Ocean invite you to take a refreshing dip after your hike. Fajã dos Vimes is also a great base for further adventures – from here, you can continue on to the trail leading to the picturesque Fajã de São João.

This scenic 3.1 km route along the island’s southern coast offers stunning ocean views and a journey through the raw, wild landscapes of São Jorge.

You’ll start again in Fajã dos Vimes, where you can drop by the local handicraft workshop and taste coffee straight from the plantation – the only one of its kind in the Azores! The trail begins at the marina, giving you the chance for a quick swim before heading out. Walking across the fajã westward takes you onto a dirt path along the cliff, surrounded by cheesewood trees, which give this section of the trail a distinctly different atmosphere.

Along the way, you’ll come across intersections where you can choose to continue your hike in different directions – perhaps heading back to Serra do Topo via PR02 SJO (Serra do Topo – Fajã dos Vimes) or taking the longer and more demanding GR01 (Grande Rota de São Jorge), which spans the entire island.

The trail ends in Portal – a small but picturesque spot where you’ll truly appreciate a moment of quiet and connection with nature. It’s an ideal place to wrap up a day full of experiences, whether you’ve chosen to end your hike here or extended it from Fajã dos Vimes.
